On Gandhi Jayanti [2 October], there will be War. As ironical as it may sound, but perhaps the late Mahatma [Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi] ,too, would be keeping an eye on this celluloid war from the heavens. The Siddharth Anand directed Yash Raj Films has released the trailer of their much-anticipated action thriller War today [27 August]. The title may be a tad too simple, but the film promises to up the scales in the history of Indian action films.
The presence of superstar Hrithik Roshan and gen next star Tiger Shroff is enough to trigger a magnetic effect, but it is the visual spectacle on offer that could turn a new leaf in the presentation of action films in India The exotic foreign locales, high octane chase sequences, heavy artillery, adrenalin rush will surely give the fans goosebumps. All the visuals are captured by Bang Bang (2014) Director Of Photography Benjamin Jasper. If some of the visuals rekindle memories of noted Hollywood action films, then it only tells that Indian action genre has now perhaps upped the ante with War.
A screenplay penned by Shridhar Raghavan and Anand, War is a based on the simple premise of a rogue agent Kabir [Roshan] being chased by his once upon a time pupil Khaled [Shroff]. Kabir had thought Khaled to never back down from a challenge, and so he wouldn’t hesitate to pull the trigger if Khaled was facing him.
Initially, the trailer does seem to suggest that Khaled perhaps is turning against his masters to join hands with Kabir. However, the final bloodied combat with Kabir also suggests that perhaps, Khaled could be the double agent here or may be the main antagonist. At the heart of this tale does appears to be a potential missile/nuclear threat, being orchestrated in perhaps in one of our terror heaven neighbour. The suspense element in the trailer bodes well for the film as it builds an intrigue around it.
Remarkably, for all his physical prowess, Hrithik Roshan has seldom been in an edge-of-the-seat thriller. He’s been a super hero before – Krrish 3 , but a superhero can never provide the same thrill as that of mortal being pulling off great stunts. It would be interesting to see the level of action that the now 45-year-old shows in War.
Locking horns against his idol is not easy, but therein lies the challenge for Shroff. Action stars are present in single digits in Bollywood. While Shroff has done his share of action films, but War is his biggest test not just as an action hero but also as an actor.
Vaani Kapoor fans would hope that the struggling actress offers more than sex appeal in War. Her character could be on the lines of a Bond girl.
All said and done, the largely visually impressive trailer, holds great promise for War. Fans surely can’t wait for 2 October.
