Tiger Shroff and Hrithik Roshan in War (2019)

Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff going to War had paid rich dividends with the Yash Raj Films’ setting a record Rs51.50 crore nett on its opening day, as reported by  War has beaten the record of another YRF flick Thugs of Hindostan (2018) that made made Rs48.27 crore nett on the opening day last year.

What’s remarkable is that War has only released in about 3800-3900 screens in India.  Aamir Khan’s Thugs of Hindostan had a wider release (4700 screens).  War is said to be made at an estimate budget of Rs200 crore.  Yash Raj Films is said to have struck lucrative satellite and digital deals with Star Gold and Amazon Prime Video, respectively.

It’s the biggest opening for Roshan beating the Rs24.40 crore nett that Bang Bang (2014) got on its opening day. Tiger Shroff’s previous best was Baaghi 2 (2018) that bagged Rs25 crore nett on its opening day.

War has set the record for the highest opening for a Hindi film. The reviews have been mixed for War and so the challenge will be whether it can sustain over the working days.  War released on mid week that happened to be a national holiday on account of Gandhi Jayanti.

Thugs of Hindostan had a stunning opening but the poor reviews didn’t help the film’s cause and the period drama nosedived from its day two on wards.  Made at an estimated budget of Rs300 crore, Thugs of Hindostan could only made Rs138.34 crore nett in India business.

The word of mouth though has been positive for War and Yash Raj Films will hope the action thriller scales huge heights at the box office.
