First time director Gopi Puthran’s film promises to be a gripping psychological thriller

Mardaani 2 (2019)

Much like the unending sexual crimes, cinema, too, is increasingly turning out stories on crimes of passion.  Barring a couple of films – Mom (2017), Article 15 (2019), the others have shown insensitivity in dealing with such a subject.  Rani Mukerji will deal with a notorious rapist, murderer in her next Mardaani 2. Yash Raj Films released the trailer today.

Another manhunt film for a sadistic killer.  What’s new about it? Critics would argue.  But what is alarming about Mardaani 2 is that the killer here appears to a juvenile. For decades, juvenile criminals got away leniently for their heinous crimes for the laxity in law meant accused under 18 years couldn’t be tried as adults.  Mohammad Afroz, the man who brutalized Nirbhaya, got away leniently as he was few months short of turning 18 when he committed the crime. The law though has since been amended with  juveniles in conflict with law in the age group of 16–18, involved in heinous offences, to be tried as adults.

The law though is of least worry for Shivani [Rani Mukerji] for she appears to be dealing with a monster. There are only glimpses of the killer. In one little screenshot, all we see is the killer with red-dyed hair and an evil smile. Towards the end of the trailer, we see a bald teen with faced painted blue.  The bald man is popular TV actor Vishal Jethwa.

Of course, the bald look, would spring memories of Ashutosh Rana in Sangharsh (1999). However, Rana played no rapist in the Preity Zinta, Akshay Kumar-starrer that was a sheepish remake of the Hollywood psychological thriller Silence of the Lambs [1991].

Based on true events, Mardaani 2 covers the manhunt for a serial rapist in Kota, Rajasthan.

The plot is self-explanatory, but Mardaani 2 promises to be a gripping, psychological thriller. The neatly cut trailer grips you with fear, anger and frustration.  Perhaps, the makers could have done away with the brief shot of the bald Jethwa for that tends to blow the lid of the suspect.  Perhaps, it is the lone con in an otherwise thrilling trailer.

As an actress, Mukerji found a new dimension to her with Mardaani [2014]. What appealed about Mukerji in the first film was the very realistic portrayal of a woman cop.  She had a racket to expose in Mardaani [2014], but given the barbaric nature of the rapist’s crimes, expect Shivani to unleash her full fury in Mardaani 2.  Fans can’t wait for Shivani Shivaji Roy to whip the hunter again.

Watch the trailer below.

Mardaani 2 is set to be released on 13 December.
