Well, as we saw in early January, 2019, a patriotic film got a huge thumbs up from the audience. Last year, Vicky Kaushal’s Uri: The Surgical Strike set the box office on fire bagging over Rs244 crore nett in domestic business. Well, it looks like Ajay Devgn’s period war film Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior is headed for a fine run at the box office too.
The T-Series, Ajay Devgn co-produced Tanhaji; The Unsung Warrior has picked a good Rs60 crore in its opening weekend, as reported by BoxOfficeIndia.com.
The Ajay Devgn, Saif Ali Khan-starrer picked up Rs25-26 crore nett on Sunday to take its three-day total to Rs60 crore nett. Made at an estimated budget of Rs125 crore, Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior is released in 3880 screens in India.
Meanwhile, there was only disappointment for the Deepika Padukone-starrer Chhapaak with the Meghna Gulzar directorial only bagging around Rs18.5 crore nett in its opening weekend. Apart from facing legal wrangles, the film courted controversy after lead actress and co-producer Padukone met with the agitating students of Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi. This led to a huge outcry on social media, with many, presumably right wing netizens calling for the film to be boycotted. It’s hard to say whether people have paid heed to such calls, but there is no denying that the film has so far struggled to make an impact at the box office.
Inspired by the story of acid attack victim and social activist Laxmi Agarwal, Chhapaak is said to have been released in about 1000-1200 screens in India. The Fox Star Studios produced Chhapaak is made at an estimated budget of Rs45 crore. The film only gradually improved to Rs7.5 crore nett on Sunday but it’s not been enough to drive Chhapaak.
