Veteran actor Jagdeep passes away at 81

A veteran of close to 400 films, Syed Ishtiaq Jafri, better known by his stage name Jagdeep, was among the finest comedian in Hindi cinema

Veteran actor Jagdeep passed away at around 8.30 pm today [8 July] at his Mumbai residence. He was 81. Though not confirmed, but the funeral is expected to take place at Mazgaon, Mustafa Bazaar on 9 July.

No official word has come yet from the family, but super star Ajay Devgn expressed his sorrow on the passing away of the legend.

“Heard the sad news of Jagdeep Saab’s demise. Always enjoyed watching him on screen. He brought so much joy to the audience. My deepest condolences to Jaaved and all members of the family. Prayers for Jagdeep Saab’s soul,” tweeted Devgn.

A CINTAA [Cine and TV Artistes’ Association] member, too, confirmed about the tragic news.

Born as Syed Ishitaq Ahmed in Amritsar, 1939, the actor was well known by his stage name Jagdeep. Having begun as child artiste in the film Afsana [1951], Jagdeep went on to play the hero in his early films, but only found success playing a comedian. In his over six decade career, Jagdeep acted in close to 400 films. He is best remembered for his comic roles in films like Sholay [1975] where he played the popular character of Soorma Bhopali, as Chandu in Agent Vinod [1977], and Macchar Singh in Purana Mandir [1984], Jagdeep was last seen in the film Gali Gali Chor Hai [2012].
