Nawazuddin Siddiqui in Raat Akeli Hai [2020]

A gorgeous Tanuja tried seducing Vinay [Dev Anand] through the Asha Bhosle-crooned tantalising number Raat Akeli Hai in Chetan Anand’s Jewel Thief [1967].  Casting director Honey Trehan has titled his maiden film after this classic song. However, the similarities end there.  Trehan’s Raat Akeli Hai [2020] is an intense murder mystery with Nawazuddin Siddiqui at the helm, essaying a determined cop out to crack the murder of a landlord Thakur Raghubeer Singh .

Radhika Apte returns to the Netflix world post ‘Ghoul’(2018). Siddiqui and Apte come together for the first time since Sacred Games season 1 [2017]. But if we recall well, the duo didn’t share the screen then.  Apte and Siddiqui have earlier worked together in Badlapur [2015] and Manjhi: The Mountain Man [2015].

Netflix released the trailer today with the film set to be released on 31 July, 2020. The movie is one of the 17 originals that Netflix will release in due time.

Coming back to the trailer, it’s quite evident that the plot revolves around the gunshot murder of a powerful landlord whose case has been assigned to inspector Jatil Yadav (Nawazuddin Siddiqui). The cop suspects every member of the household, sensing that the truth is far from what is being presented. Apte plays the landlord’s mistress. Every member in the Raghubeer Singh household appears to be guarding their dirty dark secrets, none of them having any remorse of losing their patriarch.

Jatil (Siddiqui) goes by his hunch that an insider is involved in the killing and every member of the house becomes a suspect in this murder mystery. The trailer shows everybody being questioned and their poker faced reactions hinting that perhaps it was a well-planned murder. Jatil Yadav rightly calls it a ‘twisted case’ but he will stop at nothing to find the killer(s). The threats from local politicians, superiors and powerful figures won’t stop him in his ranks.

While it is another whodunnit saga, but the gripping, pacey trailer holds your imagination.  We are used to seeing him play a don or criminal, but Siddiqui returns in a cop avatar since Raees [2017].  Remember, he also played archetypal cop -Deputy Inspector General A Khan, in Vidya Balan-starrer Kahaani [ 2012]. One felt that Siddiqui didn’t do justice to those characters or maybe they weren’t well-written. However, Trehan seems to have unearthed a new intensity and swag to Siddiqui as Jatil Yadav.  He’s no Chulbul Pandey, but Yadav perhaps has the same air of confidence around him.  To make it more interesting, Apte seems to be matching Siddiqui’s intensity.

The ensemble cast also includes notable actors like Ila Arun, Aditya Shrivastava, Shweta Tripathi, Khalid Tyabji, Shivani Raghuvanshi and writer-filmmaker Tigmanshu Dhulia.

Netflix doesn’t have a great history of producing Indian originals, but it looks like Raat Akeli Hai [2020] might turn the tide for Netflix India.
