Advocate Nitin Satpute reminds that transactions done over a long period of time couldn’t have been done without the consent of Sushant Singh Rajput.

With DCP Abhishek Trimukhe ruling out the ‘nepotism/gangism by legacy studios to ban Sushant Singh Rajput‘ theory, the focus perhaps now shifts mainly to the Chhichhore actor’s personal life. Girl friend Rhea Chakraborty has copped criticism from aggrieved fans and even faced rape and death threats by some unruly people. Two days back, it was reported that Chakraborty’s alleged spending of Sushant Singh Rajput’s finances were now being probed by the Mumbai police. Late last evening [17 July], citing sources, a top Hindi news channel ran a report claiming that Chakraborty was using Rajput’s plastic money [debit and credit cards] for the last 11 months before his death.
“The bank records of Sushant Singh Rajput, checked by the Mumbai police, has revealed that before Rajput’s suicide, the 11-months records have shown that Rajput’s girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty was using his credit and debit cards for her shopping. The police investigation has also revealed that it was Rajput who had taken care of Chakraborty’s European tour last year,” reported News18 India.
To the best of our knowledge, a bank statement only reveals transaction details, and based on them, one cannot conclude who swiped the card[s]. Maybe, the kind of merchants where the transaction took place could have led to assumptions of Chakraborty swiping Rajput’s cards. However, the question that needs to be asked is that if these findings are true, but then was Chakraborty swiping these cards without the consent of Rajput?
Given how banking system works, most credit card companies follow strict security protocols with customers requiring to put OTP [One Time Password] for each online transaction. The transaction at vendor/merchant counter may or may not require credit/debit card pin. 11 months is a long period, and thus even if Chakraborty was using the cards, it wouldn’t have been possible without the consent of the late actor. Also, transaction of higher amounts often sees bank customer care executives call the card holder and verify if s/he has swiped their card for the particular amount?
Noted Advocate Nitin Satpute reminded that a relative, partner, or friend using some one’s plastic money with their consent is no crime.
“Even if you swipe a card for one rupee, the cardholder gets a notification,” Satpute said, “11 months is a long time, and thus it is hard to imagine that any transaction in this period would have taken place without his consent. If Rhea did use his cards, then that is not objectionable. People give their cards to their spouses, partners, loved ones and even close friends.”
The lawyer though is a little intrigued by the timing of Chakraborty’s request for a CBI probe into the actor’s death. “While using a partner’s plastic money is all fine, but you do wonder why has a person spoken after one month of the investigation, admitting to be the deceased’s girl friend and asking for a CBI probe? Has she made such a request on the back of excessive social media trolling, threats?,” questioned Satpute.
The news channel also reported that Chakraborty was a partner in the companies that were recently floated by Rajput.
Efforts to reach out to DCP Trimukhe to verify such report didn’t yield any response. Rhea Chakraborty, too, didn’t revert to our text message.
Rajput was found dead in his Bandra, Mumbai home on 14 June, 2020.
