Apart from aggrieved Sushant Singh Rajput fans, now film accused of hurting Hindu sentiments

The recent confession by rapper Badshah of paying Rs75 lakhs to get more social media followers has made one question the authenticity of the genuine social media followers. But there’s no ambiguity over the response to the trailer of Sadak 2 . The Mahesh Bhatt directorial, that stars his daughters Alia, Pooja, is set to be released on Disney+ Hotstar on 28 August.
The film though has been caught in the crossfire over the Sushant Singh Rajput case. Mahesh Bhatt’s proximity to main accused Rhea Chakraborty has seen the Bhatts come in for sharp criticism from aggrieved Rajput fans on social media. Many of them have threatened to uninstall Disney+ Hotstar application if the Over-The-Top player went ahead with its scheduled release. The trailer of the film released yesterday and it met with a negative response.
As a film journalist, we were objective in our disapproval of the trailer. Sadak 2 came across like an old school revenge plot that has very few takers today. However, we presume that the large number of dislikes to Sadak 2 trailer were on account of aggrieved Rajput fans and [self-styled] anti-nepotism warriors. As we write, the Sadak 2 trailer has received over 18 million views. Out of this, it has bagged a staggering 5.7 million dislikes. The #Sadak2dislike was trending on Twitter.
Remember, Mayuresh Krishna, the brother of Sushant Singh Rajput’s brother-in-law Vishal Kirti, had created a ‘nepometer’ to gauge the (perceived) nepotism in a film. For a good month and half, it was widely believed that it was nepotism/gangism by legacy studios that drove Rajput to suspected suicide. Sadak 2 was the first film to be measured by Krishna’s nepometer. Directed and produced by Mahesh Bhatt. the film has his daughter Alia in the lead, with other daughter Pooja, too, likely to have a special appearance. The lead hero Sanjay Dutt is son of legendary actors Sunil and Nargis Dutt, while Aditya Roy Kapur is the brother of famous producer Siddharth Roy Kapur.
Poor Alia Bhatt seems to be caught in this crossfire. Sadak 2 was mired in another row after the Vishva Hindu Parishad accused the film of being Anti-Hindu and hurting Hindu sentiments. The VHP has appealed to the Centre to take action against the film.
“Mahesh Bhatt’s directorial film Sadak 2 has once again insulted the Hindu faith which will be shown in Hotstar. The film is a product of nepotism, which is encouraged by Mahesh Bhatt. The central government should look into this ” VHP spokesperson Vijay Shankar Tiwari had tweeted on 12 August.
24 hours later, it wasn’t just Sadak 2, but Bollywood came in attack on social media for allegedly for insulting Hindu gods. The #AntiHinduMoviesByBollywood was a top trend on Twitter. Aamir Khan’s PK was among the films that came in for criticism.
