In a span of just over a month, cinephiles will be privy to two historical war films that celebrate the valour of two Maratha warriors.  Ashutosh Gowariker’s Panipat will pay tribute to Maratha Empire general Sadashiv Rao Bhau in Panipat (2019). In early January, Ajay Devgn will release his film Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior.  The latter chronicles the heroics of 17 century Maratha warrior Tanaji Malusare in the Battle of Sinhagad in 1670.

Producer by T-Series and Ajay Devgn, the maker’s unveiled the first poster of their epic biographical film. Tanhaji also happens to be the 100 film in Devgn’s career. Fellow actor Akshay Kumar launched the poster of Tanhaji and congratulated Devgn for his long journey.

“We started our journey in this industry together…30 years ago.And I’ve seen your graph only grow from strength to strength. And as you are all set to mark your century with #TanhajiTheUnsungWarrior,I wish you nothing but lots of love and luck.Shine on my friend @ajaydevgn,” tweeted Kumar

Needles to say, that Devgn looks impressive as Tanhaji.

Saffron is perceived as color of valour and warriors from Hindostan [now India] carried it in their turban proudly.  With a catch line of ‘swaraj se badhkar kya?” [Is there anything bigger than freedom, self governance?], Tanhaji sends its message across straight.

Malusare hailed from the Koli community. On the day of his son’s wedding, Malusare was called upon by the Maratha King Shivaji Maharaj.  The Koli warrior put the wedding plans on hold and as instructed by his king, he proceeded to recapture Kondhana fort from the Mughals. The fort was then ruled by Rajput officer Udaybhan Rathod, who operated under the Mughal command.

Legend has it that Tanaji and his forces climbed the steep hills using the help of a ghorpad [monitor lizard] named Yashwanti.  While the fort was eventually captured but Tanaji succumbed to his grave wounds.

A grief stricken Shivaji would then later honour Tanaji by calling him a sinha [lion]. The Kondhana Fort was then renamed in his honour as Sinhagad.

Saif Ali Khan is playing the role of Udaybhan Rathod.

Directed by Om Raut, Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior is set to be released on 10 January. Tanhaji will also be released in 3D.
