It proved to be a double whammy for Divya Khosla Kumar on 20 November. Not only was it her birthday, but the actress also celebrated the success of the single Yaad Piya Ki Aane Lagi remake that is picturised on her. A personal and professional high. She sure couldn’t have asked for a better birthday.
“Yes, of course. I am very happy and thankful to god. Thankful to my fans, well wishers for supporting me in my journey. All this wouldn’t have been possible without your support. Thanks to the audience for making my song such a hit“ Khosla told journalists on Wednesday.
After featuring in a few films and music videos, Khosla gets a big break as she has been picked to star opposite John Abraham in Satyameva Jayate 2. Being the wife of music mogul Bhushan Kumar helps but Divya reminded that she was picked for Satyameva 2 after the director Milap Zaveri and other were impressed by her show in the short film Bulbul.
Divya has directed two films Yaariyan (2014) and Sanam Re (2016). It was only after that she contemplated on getting in front of the camera. But it was not an easy foray into acting.
“After Sanam re, I was contemplating what to do!. Should I direct? Should I act? There were more opportunities to direct, but I felt, If I have to act, it should happen now. Nothing is easy. Everyone goes through a struggle. How could I go to other [production houses] and ask for work because I am Bhushan Kumar’s wife?,” said Khosla.
The director-turned-actor caught us by surprise when she stated that she was confused about pursuing her dreams. Khosla credited people like Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru [director of Yaad Piya Ki Aani Lagi remake] and Satyameva Jayate 2 director Milap Zaveri for giving her the opportunity to express her talent.
However, being the wife of a music mogul and a top producer, and yet she has to struggle, seems a little odd, pointed out a journalist. Khosla giggled before answering, “There is struggle. Sanam Re was three years ago. Since then I’ve been wondering what to do next. I worked on my dance skills, fitness. I’ve never depended upon my husband for work. When I made Yaariyan, he didn’t even listen to the script . Once it released, and succeeded, it’s only then that he had confidence in me,” revealed Khosla.
The actress naturally gets all support from her husband, but also pointed out that her husband never interfered in her work.
Though her two directorial did well commercially, both Yaariyan and Sanam Re didn’t win critical praise.
The Sanam Re director took all in her stride. “Be it praise or criticism, I don’t take it to heart. I am just thankful to god for this journey. When I came to the industry, I knew nothing – direction or acting. I’ve learnt a lot though in these years. I believe I have grown as a creative person,” said Divya.
Here’s wishing Khosla a very happy birthday and success in her future endeavors.
