Choose your words carefully for they may come back to bite you. In his excitement over the Supreme Court handing over the Sushant Singh Rajput case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Bihar Director General of Police Gupteshwar Pandey used a startling, derogatory remark against the accused Rhea Chakraborty.
Chakraborty had filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking the transfer of the FIR in Bihar to Mumbai. In her petition, Chakraborty had stated that the Bihar police had no jurisdiction over the case, and it was only acting under pressure from Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, with the local state government using the case for political agenda.
A video has been shared by Asian News International (ANI) on their Twitter handle in which DGP Pandey can be heard saying, “Bihar ke mukhyamantri par comment karne ki aukaat Rhea Chakraborty ki nehi hai” (Rhea Chakraborty doesn’t have the stature to comment on Bihar’s Chief Minister).”
In its order, the Supreme Court ruled that FIR filed by the Bihar police was lawful.
“Bihar police jo kar rahi thi, bilkul kanooni tareeke se, samvaidhanik tareeke se sahi kaam kar rahi thi. Aur Bihar ke Mukhyamantri ne jo support kiya, aaj Sushant ko agar nyay milne ki ummeed mili hai, toh Bihar Mukhyamantri ke support ke kaaran.” (The Bihar Police was doing its job legally and constitutionally. If today there is a hope for justice for Sushant then it has only made possible because of the support of Bihar’s Chief Minister).
Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead on 14 June 2020 at his Mumbai residence. The apex court has asked the Mumbai Police to hand over all the evidence collected so far in the case to the CBI.
