He has his critics, but Rohit Shetty is arguably the most successful director today. Shetty’s built his career around action, comedy dramas. Fans are perhaps set for the biggest action extravaganza with Shetty’s Sooryavanshi [2020] set to be released on 24 March. While Akshay Kumar steps into the Rohit Shetty world of cop-action dramas, but super cop Sooryavanshi will be ably supported by Simmba [Ranveer Singh] and Singham [Ajay Devgn] to form Shetty’s cop trinity. It is rare these days to get three superstars in one frame. While Devgn and Singh are likely to have limited screen presence, but the coming together of the three superstars is what makes Sooryavanshi [2020] a keenly awaited film. Shetty has joined hands with Dharma Productions, Cape of Good Hope films to co-produce the action drama that will be distributed by Reliance Entertainment.

After taking on corrupt goons. politicians in the Singham franchise, Shetty delivered a strong message against rapes in Simmba [2018]. With Sooryavanshi, Shetty tackles the global menace – terrorism. Yunus Sajawal has penned the screenplay for Shetty’s story with the troika of Farhad Samji, Sanchit Bedre and Vidhi Ghadgaonkar penning the dialogues. Sajawal has earlier penned screenplay for Shetty’s films likes Golmaal 3 (2010), Singham (2011), Bol Bachchan (2012), Chennai Express (2013), Singham Returns (2014), Dilwale(2015), Golmaal Again (2017), Simmba (2018)

Shetty builds his story around the long held belief of unused, hidden RDX [Research Department Explosive] from the 1993 Mumbai blasts. It’s been long feared that the terrorists had smuggled in around 1 tonne of RDX, out of which some 400 kgs was used, while the remaining is said to be hidden. The enemy here is the sleeper cells of Pakistani terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba. The trailer though only mentions the word Lashkar. The bad guys here are Jackie Shroff, Abhimanyu Singh, Gulshan Grover and a host of others.

Mumbai is the target again but the onus of preventing a major terror attack lies on the shoulders of DCP Veer Sooryavanshi [Akshay Kumar]. Seasoned actor Jaaved Jaaferi plays his colleague.

At 4 minutes 15 seconds duration, the trailer is pretty long but it is filled with the usual dose of Rohit Shetty film – action, romance, punch dialogues, car flying. Well, there are many helicopters too. Sooryavanshi is made at a much bigger scale than any Rohit Shetty film. Despite its predictable narrative, a Rohit Shetty action drama often tends to charm the audiences .

Katrina Kaif appears to be having a customary role of playing the hero’s wife. However, towards the end, we see Aditi [Kaif] walk behind the three super cop perhaps suggesting that Kaif might play some part in the action too. Kumar is great with action, and he looks largely impressive in the trailer. However, Kumar sounds comical when he says, “I’ve’ been shot” dialogue and falls into the arms of Aditi. Even though he has a special appearance, we believe it is going to be Ranveer Singh as Simmba who will draw the loudest cheers and whistles.

All in all, Sooryavanshi looks like a perfect mass entertainer, but the star presence is likely to draw in more audience. Shetty’s has always been honest enough to admit that he makes films for the masses. But given the huge business that many of his films have made, it is apt to say that Shetty’s films cater to most audiences. Sooryavanshi [2020] could turn out to be the biggest Rohit Shetty film ever.
